Before taking your ID photos at home, you need to make sure you’re following the right rules.
While photo requirements can vary between different forms of ID, there are some standard “passport photo style” rules you’ll usually need to follow:
Size must be 45x35mm (the same size as our ID photo prints)
Plain light background, white or cream works best
Neutral expression, with eyes open and no smiling
Lighting should be even, with no harsh shadows
No head coverings, unless for religious or medical reasons
Print quality must be sharp, clear and in colour!
Please note:Passport photo requirements are much stricter than other ID photos, which is why we recommend getting passport photos in-store. We can guarantee they’ll follow the strict HMPO rules!

What size are ID photos in the UK?
Standard UK ID photos are 45mm x 35mm (45mm high, 35mm wide). This is the regulation size for the vast majority of UK identification documents, including driving licences, railcards, bus passes, student cards and passport photos.
Our online ID prints are perfectly sized to meet this standard. You’ll get 6 copies printed on a single 6x4” print, so you can easily cut them to size!
How quickly can I get my ID photo prints?
When you order ID photo prints online, they’ll be ready to Click & Collect in just 20 minutes. Next-day home delivery is also available on all ID photo prints ordered online before 12pm, Monday to Friday.
Alternatively, you can take instant ID photos in our shops and passport photo booths!
Can I use the same photo for a driving licence and a railcard?
Yes, as long as it meets the standard UK ID photo requirements (plain background, neutral expression, no glasses, etc.), the same photo can usually be used for multiple types of ID. Just make sure you've got enough prints!
How many ID photos do I get?
You'll receive 6 identical ID photos printed on a single 6x4" sheet. Please note that all 6 photos must be the same image, you can't order different photos on one ID print.
Are online ID photos suitable for passport applications?
They're the right size, but we always recommend getting passport photos done in-store. Our colleagues check every photo against HMPO's strict criteria, which means no rejected applications (and no ruined holidays).
Online ID prints are best for driving licences, railcards and other forms of ID where the rules are a little less strict. However, you can use them for passport applications, if you cannot get to a Max Spielmann shop or photo booth.
What if my ID photo is rejected?
If you're ordering online, we unfortunately can't guarantee acceptance for official government documents (particularly passports). This means we cannot process returns or refunds if your ID photos have been rejected.
If acceptance is critical, we strongly recommend visiting your nearest shop instead, as our colleagues will check your photos on the spot and retake them free of charge if there's any issue!
