You’ve taken all kinds of amazing family photos, so now you want to display all your favourites on the wall. And so you should.

Displaying family photos is a great way to brighten living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms and every other part of your home.

From colourful gallery walls to large statement pieces, there are literally tons of photo wall ideas for you to consider.

To help you get started, we’ve put together some of our favourite picture wall ideas, along with tips on how to display photos on the wall!

1. Arrange framed photos in a neat grid

Sometimes you just can’t go wrong with a neat and tidy photo grid. It might not be the most creative photo wall idea on this list, but there’s just something about the clean lines and simple symmetry that never fails to draw the eye.

A classic photo grid is perfect for creating more compact, modern and minimalist picture walls. To keep things extra neat, we recommend using square-shaped framed photo prints for this picture wall layout, since this super-symmetrical display will have a much stronger visual impact on your walls!

2. Make a re-stickable gallery wall

Nobody wants their home decor to become stale, so restickable photo tiles let you keep things fresh. These lightweight wooden tiles are really easy to move and rearrange, so you can keep changing the shape, style and layout of your display without damaging your walls.

Since there are no hammers or nails involved, you could easily switch between classic grid formats, asymmetrical clusters, diagonal lines or any other photo wall layouts you can think of!

3. Frame family photos above the sofa

Yes, that big empty space behind your sofa is *perfect* for a family photo wall. Whether you’re displaying large framed poster prints or a collection of smaller wall art, this picture wall creates a real focal point, draws the eye to your amazing photos and adds personality to your living room.

A photo wall above a large sofa makes the room feel more balanced and complete, especially when your choice of frames, photos and artwork complement the style of your sofa.

4. Try mismatched frame styles and sizes

Using a mix of photo frame styles, sizes and textures will always make your photo wall feel more creative. Unlike classic uniform photo grids, a mismatched photo wall is more playful, eye-catching and visually interesting - but they’re also much harder to pull off!

Your mismatched gallery wall should feel curated instead of chaotic, so we recommend sticking to just a few main colours or a particular theme that helps create a more cohesive display. It’s also really easy to get the balance all wrong here, so plan your photo wall layout on the floor to ensure all the various frame styles are arranged perfectly.

5. Showcase photos with a creative split canvas

A split (or multi-panel) canvas is ideal for showing off larger photos or panoramic scenes. Splitting your favourite photo across multiple canvas prints creates a more artistic and modern display, while the jaw-dropping style creates an eye-catching focal point that feels more engaging than other photo wall ideas.

6. Stick to a photo wall theme

Some of the best photo walls we’ve seen will stick to a particular theme, whether it’s scenic holiday snaps or happy family photos. This gives your photo wall a more cohesive look, but it’s also the perfect way to tell your favourite stories.

For example, your photo wall could show a timeline of the kids growing up over the years, showcase milestone moments in your relationship, or share all your most amazing travel adventures.

7. Create a dorm room collage with prints

A “dorm room” style photo wall is very popular with teens and students, as it’s a cute, creative and cheaper way to decorate bedrooms and first apartments. Instead of worrying about hanging or framing, this is a collage of photo prints that you can simply stick to the wall in any shape you like.

From photos with friends to cute pet photos, you can fill a whole wall with your best snaps, or get creative with hearts, grids, spirals or even freeform layouts!

8. Design a yearly family gallery wall

You’re constantly taking amazing photos, so create a photo wall you can refresh with new photos every year. Once you’ve arranged a selection of photo frames on the wall, you can switch the photos out each year to showcase all of your most recent happy memories!

9. Feature one statement piece

Instead of curating a gallery wall, consider displaying a single photo with one huge statement piece. Large gallery-wrapped canvas prints and photo posters are perfect for this, since they create an instant focal point and make a striking statement on your walls.

These simpler photo walls are much easier to set up and maintain, while a large piece centred above a sofa or bed can make the room feel more balanced. If you want to be a little more creative, then you can still feature smaller framed prints around your large statement piece!

10. Mix photos with artwork and items

The most eye-catching gallery walls don’t just feature photos, but also include a mix of other artwork and items. Whilst you might want your amazing photos to take centre stage, items like mirrors, lights, plants and wooden hanging decorations will add extra depth to your photo wall display.

Mixing in items, illustrations and other artwork breaks things up and ensures your wall of photos never feels monotonous. Even better, you can use things like holiday souvenirs, maps and postcards to help tell a full story, or simply add in items that help to express your personality and interests.
