photo frame size guide

You’ve taken loads of amazing photos. Some are saved on your phone, others have been printed already, and now you’re thinking about framing your favourites.

Before you can hang anything on the wall, you’ll need to learn all about the different photo frame sizes and how to choose the right frame for your pictures.

Picture frames come in all kinds of sizes, styles, and orientations, so choosing perfect photo frame sizes isn’t always as simple as it seems.

You’ve probably got a few questions, so here’s everything you need to know about standard photo frame sizes in the UK. You’ll be displaying your amazing photos in no time.

How to measure a photo for framing

First things first, you need to measure your photo prints before you can frame them. You might feel bamboozled by all the measurements, but all you really need is a tape measure, your photo and a little notepad to jot it all down.

To find out what photo frame size you need, simply lay your photo flat, and then measure the height and width. That’s it.

Photo frames are usually measured using the inside dimensions, so you’ll simply need to order a frame that matches the size of your photo.  For example, if your photo measures 7x5”, then you’ll just need a 7x5” frame.

Picture frame size chart for your photos

Your choice of picture frame will depend on the size of your photo. We’ve even got a separate guide on standard photo sizes to help you choose the perfect prints.

When you want your photo to fill the entire frame, then you’ll simply need to choose a photo frame size that matches your picture. For example, an 8x6” photo will fit perfectly to the edges of an 8x6” frame. Easy.

However, if you want a window mount around your photo, then the total size of the frame will obviously be a little bigger.

Since you might be filling a very specific space on your wall or shelf, this photo frame size chart shows how standard frame sizes usually differ with a mount border.

Picture frames for all standard photo sizes

The most popular photo frame sizes are 6x4”, 7x5”, 10x8”, A4 and A3, but there are other standard picture frame sizes you’ll want to consider.

Here’s a quick rundown of the differences between these popular photo frame sizes, along with some info on choosing the perfect fit for your photos.

Picture frame sizes for 6x4” photos

When printing photos online, the standard photo size is usually 6x4”. This is the smallest photo frame size on this list, and they’re a very popular choice for photo walls and collage displays.

If you want to frame a 6x4” with a mount border, then 8x6” and 10x8” frames offer a fantastic balance between the border and your photo.

Picture frame sizes for 7x5” photos

Slightly larger than a 6x4” photo, 7x5” picture frames are popular for photos that focus on a particular person, such as a selfie. They’re a great choice for popping your photo frame on the mantelpiece, shelf, desk, or any other small spaces.

When you want a frame with a mount, then 9x7” or 12x10” frames typically offer the best photo-to-mount border ratio.

Picture frame sizes for 8x6” photos

Due to the 4:3 aspect ratio, 8x6” photo frames are perfect for framing the best photos on your phone. Larger than standard 6x4” photos, 8x6” photos are very popular for framing, so you can find loads of frame options in this size when shopping online.

An 8x6” photo with a window border usually looks best in a 10x8” frame, as this offers a stylish border while keeping the spotlight on your photo.

Picture frame sizes for 10x8” photos

This medium-sized enlargement is ideal for framing happy family portraits and higher-quality photos. 10x8” photo frames are large enough to display on the wall as a feature piece, but also not so big that you can’t display them on your desk.

However, this might change if you want to frame a 10x8” photo with a mount, as the frame would then measure at least 14x11”.

Picture frame sizes for A4 photos

A4 picture frames are particularly popular for displaying certificates, documents, kids' artwork, and anything else on standard printer paper. This is the easiest frame size to find online, so you might want to consider printing photos in A4 to easily find the perfect frame for it.

If you want to display an A4 picture with a border mount, then we recommend a 16x11.5” frame or simply an A3 frame with a slightly chunkier border.

Picture frame sizes for A3 photos

Double the size of A4, frames for A3 enlargements are just as easy to find. Suitable for displaying on the wall, they’re a great choice if you’re framing a feature piece that needs to grab attention.

Picture frame sizes for 20x16” photos

This bigger enlargement is ideal for large family portraits, but should only be used for high-quality images. 20x16” photos are often used as statement feature pieces, so you’d usually put them inside a 20x16” frame without a mount border, so that your eye-catching photo fills all the space and totally steals the spotlight.

Square photo frame sizes explained

Since they’re the same dimensions, square photo prints are perfect for displaying your favourite Instagram photos
