What Is A Photo Tile? Our Complete Guide
Your phone’s probably packed with great photos, so now you’re looking for a fun, modern and easy way to display them on the wall.
We hear you loud and clear, and our brand-new photo tiles could be the answer you’re looking for.
But what is a photo tile? This quick guide covers everything you need to know about photo tiles, including what they are, how you use them, and creative display ideas to try at home!
What is a photo tile?

A photo tile is a lightweight print made of either wood, foamboard or acrylic that’s easy to stick on the wall. Photo tiles are usually square, and feature adhesive or magnetic backs so you can easily display them in your home without any hooks or nails.
Photo tiles help you create a more modern and customisable photo display, since they’re so easy to remove and rearrange on your walls. A modern alternative to traditional photo prints, photo tiles create a stunning dimensional effect that really makes your photos pop and stand out on your walls.
Photo tiles are usually frameless and offer a more minimalist style, but you can also frame your picture tiles to create a more elegant display.
Why use photo tiles?

Photo tiles are the quickest and easiest way to display pictures on the wall. Instead of damaging your walls with a hammer and nails, you can simply stick photo tiles to the wall, which makes them the perfect option for renters or anyone who loves rearranging their photo displays.
In short, photo tiles are easy to install, incredibly versatile, and let you create a modern gallery wall without any fuss. They can also be displayed in hallways, living rooms, bedrooms or literally anywhere else around your home!
How to use photo tiles

Although some photo tiles have magnetic backs, ours feature sticky adhesive strips instead. Follow these simple steps to install your photo tiles on the wall:
1. Choose your photos
Photo tiles can display anything from treasured family photos to your favourite illustrations, so simply choose the photos you’d like to print on your tiles.
2. Order your tiles
Usually available in packs of 4, order high-quality photo tiles at Max Spielmann. You can easily upload photos straight from your phone, and then crop, reposition and perfect your tiles with our online editor.
3. Prepare your display
Before sticking them to your walls, try planning your photo tile layout on the floor instead. This will help you nail down distances between each tile and ultimately make sure your tiles will look perfect on the wall!
4. Stick tiles to the wall
Unpack your adhesive strips and peel off the backing, then stick one to each corner of your photo tile. Peel off the backing from the other side and then firmly press your tile against the wall for about 30 seconds.
5. Rearrange your tiles
If you ever want to switch up your display, you can easily remove and rearrange your photo tiles on the wall (our adhesive strips can be removed up to 5 times). This means you can either swap tiles out for new ones or keep adding more tiles to your display!
Photo tile display ideas

Photo tiles are very popular for creating clean and modern gallery walls. Thanks to their symmetrical square shape, you can use photo tiles to display photos in all kinds of creative ways, so we’ve rounded up 5 of our favourites to help get you started.
1. Classic grid display
Thanks to their square format, photo tiles are absolutely perfect for classic grid displays. Simply arrange your photo tiles into a symmetrical grid pattern and create a clean, modern and minimalist gallery wall.
2. Creative offset rows
If you want to try something a bit more dynamic and eye-catching, try staggering the rows slightly so that your tiles appear offset from each other. This is a more relaxed alternative to uniform grid layouts, and you can easily add more tiles over time without ruining the symmetry!
3. Vertical stack
Arrange your photo tiles in a single vertical column and ensure each tile is spaced evenly. Even if it runs from the top to the bottom of your wall, this vertical photo display is a real space-saver and perfect for narrow walls, corners and other tighter spaces!
4. Horizontal strip
Display your photo tiles side-by-side in a single horizontal strip, again ensuring they’re all spaced evenly. This creates a stunning panoramic display that resembles a classic film strip, and it’s the *perfect* way to display a timeline of your photos.
5. Full gallery walls
The best thing about photo tiles is that they fit seamlessly into other gallery wall displays. Instead of just displaying your photo tiles by themselves, you can slot them into creative asymmetrical displays alongside your framed photo prints, canvas prints, wall planters and anything else you might have on your wall!
